The nonprofit center provides a 60-hour training program for all volunteers, who are then certified as Rape Crisis Advocates by the California State Office of Criminal Justice Planning.
In addition to staffing the hotline, Rape Crisis Advocates also may meet victims of sexual assault, rape or sexual abuse at the hospital, police station or court to provide on-site emotional support and information.
The center also offers short- and long-term individual counseling, as well as support groups for survivors, their families and significant others.
Cal State Northridge's Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling has sponsor the Valley Trauma Center's Northridge location since 1984. In the coming weeks, a second center to serve the Santa Clarita Valley will be established.
Last year alone, the center's staff responded to more than 3,000 hotline calls, including from about 1,400 sexual assault victims, and provided counseling and support to some 750 clients, according to Patti Dengler, program director. The center made more than 400 assault prevention and education presentations to nearly 14,500 people.
Anyone over the age of 18 may apply for the upcoming training, which is scheduled for the first four weekends in March. Interested community members should call the center at (818) 772-0l96.
