OPERA SOPRANO CAROL VANESS RETURNS TO CSUN FOR BENEFIT HONORING DAVID SCOTT'S RETIREMENT

Internationally acclaimed soprano Carol Vaness, a favorite of Southern California audiences for her title role in L.A. Opera's "Tosca" at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in November 1996, and her anticipated Los Angeles performances of "Il Trovatore" later this year and "La Traviata" next season, breaks from her busy schedule on March 19 to return to her alma mater--Cal State Northridge--for a benefit performance of song and reminiscence. The Thursday evening concert begins at 8 p.m. in the University Student Union's Performing Arts Center.

Vaness, one of the top sopranos in the opera world, came to California State University, Northridge as a graduate student in 1974 to study voice with Dr. David W. Scott. The next few years were spent working closely with Scott--developing the voice, studying the languages, perfecting the craft...

In 1979 Vaness said farewell to campus life and reported to the New York City Opera, where she began an impressive international career. Today, she performs regularly in the world's major opera houses--New York's Metropolitan, Milan's La Scala, the Opˇra Bastille in Paris, the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Her lengthy discography includes recordings of Mozart arias, Haydn Masses, the Verdi Requiem, Rossini's "Sabat Mater," and numerous operas including "Don Giovanni," "Tosca" and Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro."

Her television appearances are broadcast throughout Europe and North America.

In concert, she solos in major productions with the finest orchestra's--London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the list seems endless.

Vaness now returns to the Northridge campus to share her rich, refined voice and reflect on the years devoted to training her voice with mentor, Professor Scott, who after 35 years of teaching, coaching and building the CSUN opera program to national recognition, prepares for retirement. In celebration of her former professor's distinguished career and in support of CSUN's opera program, Vaness is donating her talent and artistry to support the newly established David W. Scott Opera Fund.

The unique benefit concert, "Carol Vaness and Friends--including Delores Ziegler," brings celebrated mezzo-soprano Delores Ziegler on stage with Vaness. Ziegler's credits--like those of Vaness--could fill volume. Both Vaness and Ziegler were featured on the "Pavarotti Plus" telecasts, Live from Lincoln Center. Ziegler, eminent interpreter of bel canto mezzo roles, has the honor of being the first singer in operatic history to sing Romeo in Bellini's acclaimed masterpiece, "I Capuleti e i Montechhi," in Russian. In attendance at the opening at Moscow's Bolshoi Opera were Mikhail and Raisa Gorbachev who congratulated her following the performance.

Tickets for "Carol Vaness and Friends--including Delores Ziegler" are $75 general seating and $125 preferred seating. The concert is followed by a reception. A portion of the ticket price will be tax deductible. Call (818) 677-2488 for ticket information and (818) 677-3180 for program information.

Sponsorship packages, which include dinner with Ms. Vaness, Dr. Scott and Cal State Northridge President Blenda J. Wilson, are also available. Additional information regarding sponsorship may be obtained by calling Faye Ainsworth at (818) 677-3320.
