MEMORIAL TREE HONORS CSUN PROFESSOR

A memorial tree in honor of a Cal State Northridge English professor, who died last summer, will be dedicated during a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13.

The tree and a plaque in memory of Mahlon Gaumer will be planted on the west side of Jerome Richfield Hall on the CSUN campus, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

Gaumer joined the CSUN English department in 1969 and remained on the Northridge campus for 26 years. A medievalist who specialized in Chaucer and linguistics, Gaumer served as chairman of the English department's Teacher Preparation Committee, was a member of the Academic Council for the College of Humanities and was twice elected to the Academic Senate.

In 1984-85, he was a Fulbright senior lecturer in American literature at Ege Universiesi in Izmir, Turkey.

Gaumer's students appreciated his sense of fairness and his individuality, especially when it came to his attire, said his brother Greg.

"Mahlon was not interested in what people thought of his attire. He was often seen in unmatching socks or one of his many hats," Greg Gaumer said.

During the Feb. 13 ceremony, Gaumer's family will present the CSUN English department with a check for $10,000 to help establish an endowment in his name for English student scholarships. Those who would like to contribute to the Mahlon Gaumer English Department Scholarship Fund should call (818) 677-7738.
