Cal State Northridge's Music Therapy Program and Clinic recently received a grant from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS).
The $31,252 grant will be used to exam different methods of working with autistic children. The research work is scheduled to begin in the fall.
The program which began two years ago was developed in the department of music and currently serves approximately 45 clients with only two part-time therapists and several student interns.
"It's a wonderful situation of mentoring and learning between the students and the therapists," said Ron Borczon, director of the program. "The grant will allow us to look at different ways that autistic children can learn to express themselves."
Borczon said that receiving a grant from such a prominent organization like NARAS is a step towards getting the CSUN program recognized internationally.
For more information, call Borczon at (818) 677-3174 or Rose Mathias at (818) 677-3180.
