CSUN Introduces Members of Task Force on Intercollegiate Athletics

Cal State Northridge President Blenda J. Wilson announced today the compositon of the Task Force on Intercollegiate Athletics and the appointment of Dr. Keith Richman, founder of the North San Fernando Valley Community Foundation, as its chair.

The task force will hold an organizational meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union. Prior to the meeting, Richman will hold a press conference at 5 p.m. to discuss the structure and goals of the task force.

"The individuals who have agreed to serve on the Task Force on Intercollegiate Athletics are a stellar group," Wilson said. "I am confident that they will make thoughtful and reasoned recommendations and help the university meet the legislative mandate to develop 'a balanced and financially viable athletic program that is in full compliance with the requirements of Title IX and the CSU Cal/NOW consent decree.'"

Community members of the task force include Richman, chair and chief executive officer of Medco Associates, Inc.; Anita De Frantz, president of the Los Angeles Amateur Athletics Foundation and vice president of the International Olympic Committee; Sharon Schuster, member of the CSUN Community Advisory Board and past president of the Association of University Women; and an additional member yet to be confirmed.

Alumni members include Phil Blazer, publisher of Jewish News and Israel Today; Laura De Valencia, director of Community and Business Alliances for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power; and Trent Morgan, coordinator of CSUN's Intramural program.

Student members are Joseph T. Dagata, president of the Interfraternity Council; Jon A. Hatemi, vice-president of Associated Students; and Pamela M. Karbowski, member of the Student Athletic Congress and CSUN Women's Soccer Team.

Representing faculty are William Jennings, chair of the Department of Finance, Real Estate and Insurance; history professor James Sefton; and kinesiology professor Barbara Swerkes.

Kinesiology professor William Whiting has agreed to serve as the staff director to the task Force.
