Play Explores Father/Son Relationship

"Roosters," a play that pits father against son in a battle for control of a Chicano family, opens later this month at Cal State Northridge before heading for San Diego for the start of a Southern California tour.

The play, which takes place on Morales family land near the Arizona-Mexico border, was written by Milcha Sanchez-Scott at the Sundance Institute Playwrights Laboratory, and was originally performed at the INTAR/New York Shakespeare Festival in 1987. It was later made into a movie starring Edward James Olmos.

Anamarie Garcia, an associate professor of theatre, is directing Northridge's production, which is sponsored by the university's Department of Theatre and the College of Arts, Media, and Communication's Student Resource Center/EOP.

"The play is laced with humor, magical realism and a rich poignance that embraces all the characters," Garcia said.

Garcia said that negotiations are underway for taking the CSUN production to a conference in Mexico City.

"Roosters" will be staged in CSUN's Little Theatre on April 17-19 and 22-26. Curtain times are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tickets are $9 general admission, $7 for faculty and seniors and $5 for students. They are available at the University Student Union ticket office, (818) 677-3093, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the door two hours before curtain.
