Anamaria Garcia, an associate professor of theater at CSUN, is directing the production, which is sponsored by the university's Department of Theatre and the College of Arts, Media, and Communication's Student Resource Center/EOP.
The play, which takes place on the land of the Morales family near the Arizona-Mexico border, was written by Milcha Sanchez-Scott at the Sundance Institute Playwrights Laboratory and was originally performed at INTAR/New York Shakespeare Festival in 1987. It was later made into a movie starring Edward James Olmos and Sonia Braga.
Garcia said the play is a drama that is laced with humor, magical realism and a rich poignance that embraces all the characters. Negotiations are under way for the CSUN production to be performed at a conference in Mexico City, Garcia said.
Cast members are Ali Funes, Marina Gonzalez, Asanio Lara, Gabriel Ortiz, Raquel Sanchez and Cristela Saravia. The set was designed by Cesar Holguin; the costumes by Paula Higgins, and the lighting by Jose Lopez.
Curtain times are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Tickets are $9 general admission, $7 for faculty/seniors and $5 for students. They are available at the University Student Union ticket office, (818) 677-3093, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the door two hours before curtain.
