Opera Version of Hansel and Gretel to Be Performed

Cal State Northridge will present next month "Hansel And Gretel," performed by the Angeles Chorale Children's Chorus and CSUN opera students.

Based on Engelbert Humperdinck's opera version of the Grimm's Brothers fairy tale, the performance should appeal to both opera aficionados and young people.

David W. Scott, professor of Music at CSUN, will stage and conduct the children's chorus under the direction of Susannah Judd-Newkirk. CSUN opera students will sing the lead roles while the children's chorus complements the music and overall presentation.

The role of Gretel will be sung by Tracy Sheppard and Moira McCarty, Hansel by Sarah Kleeman and Kristina Sandahl, the Witch by Ryan Parr and Misha Shtangrud, the Father by Andrew Samonsky and Carleton Stewart and the Mother by Anely Arsow and Marrie Nelson. The set will be designed by Owen W. Smith with costumes designed by Paula Higgins.

The opera is scheduled for Oct. 10-19, in the Campus Theatre, located on the west side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

Performances are at 7 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets range from $7 to $12 and can be purchased at the door or through the Student Union Ticket Office at (818) 677-3093, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
