CSUN will also host that day the lung association's "Breath Games," a series of track and field activities specially designed for children with asthma to build their self-confidence.
The 5K (3.1 miles) "Walk 'n Run Thru CSUN" will be held at 9 a.m., just prior to the start of the Breath Games. The entry fee for the walk and run is $20 if postmarked by Oct. 20, $25 thereafter.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for all of our students to compete for a $1,000 scholarship, help raise funds for the American Lung Association of LA County and educate the community about asthma and other lung diseases," said kinesiology professor Steven Loy, who is coordinating the events along with kinesiology graduate student Julie Golgert.
The student who enrolls the most participants in the 5K walk and run earns a $1,000 scholarship, and the student who raises the most money through pledges receives a $500 scholarship, Loy said.
Scholarship contest rules and applications for the race are available from the CSUN Kinesiology Department by calling (818) 677-3220 or 677-3206. The scholarship contest runs through Oct. 24.
"The CSUN community generated a remarkable turnout-more than 1,000 walkers-for the AIDS walk," Loy said. "We hope to see a similarly strong showing for victims of asthma and other lung diseases."
For more information, call Loy at (818) 677-3220, or leave a message at (818) 677-3206.
