Latino Graduates Honored with Special Ceremony

More than 1,000 family members and friends will join Cal State Northridge's Latino graduates Saturday, May 23 for a special celebration with a cultural twist.

An estimated 125 graduates from all majors will participate in a bilingual ceremony complete with mariachi music and festive costumes at 8 a.m. at the University Club, located on the south side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

The student-organized ceremony will feature the mariachi group "Orgullo del Este de Los Angeles" and graduates dressed in traditional costumes of their countries of origin.

Jesus Javier, news anchor for KMEX-TV Channel 34, will give the keynote address. Javier, a native of Techaluta, Jalisco, Mexico, has an electrical engineering degree from the University of California at Berkeley. KMEX-TV is the nation's number one Spanish-language television station.

The ceremony will be followed by a banquet at the Westin Concord Hotel.

"We hope that the public will help us celebrate," said Raul Ruiz, coordinator for the event. Ruiz says that among Latino groups, CSUN's ceremony is one the largest in the country. Students at the university have held this ceremony for the last 29 years, he said.

For more information, call Ruiz at (818) 677-2734.
