CSUN Opera Director Ends 35-Year Campus Career With Staging of Puccini's Popular 'La Boheme'
David Scott, director of opera at Cal State Northridge, ends his 35-year career at the university with the staging and conducting of Giacomo Puccini's popular opera, "La Boheme."
There will be five performances of the perenially modern "La Boheme," reincarnated on Broadway as the musical "Rent!", on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 27, 28 and 29, and Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4, in the Campus Theatre.
During his tenure, Scott has staged and conducted more than 60 operas and numerous musical comedies at CSUN, including several productions of "La Boheme," about a group of young Bohemians toasting the lights and life of Paris from their cramped flat.
"It hardly seems possible that I am finishing 35 years," Scott said. "As I hear from students who sang in productions 10, 20, 30 years ago, it seems like yesterday. It has been a glorious time."
Under Scott's direction, the CSUN opera program has received national recognition. His most notable pupil is internationally acclaimed soprano Carol Vaness, one of the world's top operatic sopranos who studied voice with Scott at CSUN from 1974 through 1979. Vaness is donating a separate performance at CSUN to benefit the newly established David W. Scott Opera Fund.
Vaness also will attend the April 4 closing performance of "La Boheme," where she will receive an honorary doctor of fine arts degree from the California State University system.
Singers for the production of "La Boehme," about a group of young Bohemians toasting the lights and life of Paris from their cramped flat, include Marie Nelson and Tracy Sheppard as Mimi, Danielle Nice and Christine Chung as Musetta, Roger Patterson and Ryan Par as Rodolfo, Gabriel Manro and Andrew Samonsky as Marcello, and Forrest Walsh and Michael Suffolk as Schunard. Curtain times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 5 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are available at the University Student Union ticket office (818) 677-3093 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and two hours prior to a performance. Ticket prices are $12 general admission, $10 for CSUN faculty and staff, $9 for seniors and $7 for students.
