Students who participate in the semester program will spend weekend home-stays with local Korean families, while concurrently enrolled in classes of Asian American studies, Contemporary Issues Facing the Korean-American Community, Korean and Elementary Korean Language.
Founders of the program hope to provide the same experiences students would have when traveling to a different country. Professor and co-founder of the program, Janet Fish, says that the program will expand intercultural opportunities, since only one-half of one percent of all CSU students study in foreign countries in year-long programs.
Future programs could include projects with Armenian, Chinese and Iranian cultures.
A reception, exhibit and program to celebrate the Fall 1997 project will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in the Studio Theatre and Speech Drama building room 113, on the south side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
Musician, Heeran Choi Chung, who plays the kayagum, a traditional Korean stringed instrument, will perform at 7 p.m. followed by an instructional panel and film presentation of "The Story of Two Women," at 8:15 p.m.
For more information and to make reservations, call (818) 677-2138 or A.J. Kim at (818) 677-2667.
