Former Disney Animator to Host Unique Distance Learning Class

Early Walt Disney Studios animator William T. Hurtz--best-known for his later work on television's "Rocky and Bullwinkle" show and the cartoon "Gerald McBoing-Boing"--will host a unique distance learning class on animation at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday morning (Nov. 18).

Hurtz is scheduled to discuss his past work and animation in general during the class from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and should be available for interviews starting about 10:30 a.m. The video-interactive class will link students at Northridge, two other Cal State campuses and three other schools.

The class is part of a unique partnership between a nonprofit auxiliary of the California State University system known as Next Wave Learning and Warner Bros. feature animation, which is a key content provider for the year-long class involving more than 100 students at the six locations.

Hurtz' presentation--which is open to the news media--will be at Cal State Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff Street in Northridge, in room 1117 of the Education building on campus. The host instructor for Tuesday's presentation will be Cal State Northridge art professor Norm Fullner.

From 1938 to 1941, Hurtz worked as an animator on Disney features that included "Fantasia" and "Pinocchio." In later years, Hurtz also served as a director for the 1992 animated film feature "Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland" and for the late 1960s television series "George of the Jungle."

For further information, Fullner can be reached Monday evening at (818) 883-5291, or Tuesday morning through CSUN's Art Department at (818) 677-2242. For general information about accessing the campus, contact CSUN's Public Relations office at (818) 677-2130.
