Conference to Explore Challenges of Serving Mentally Ill on Probation or Parole

The Human Interaction Research Institute, which recently became affiliated with Cal State Northridge, will hold a conference Monday, June 1, on the challenges of providing services to people with mental illness in the U.S. probation and parole systems.

Conference organizers include Barry Nidorf, former director of the Los Angeles County Probation Department, and Carla Jacobs, board member of the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill.

"The American Probation and Parole Association calls mental illness among offender populations ... as one of the more understudied issues in the criminal justice system," said institute president Thomas E. Backer.

"The Association identifies some of the issues our conference will address - inadequate training, limited treatment options, lack of coordination between probation/parole agencies and mental health providers, and improper or inadequate procedures for dealing with people with mental illness on probation and parole," Backer said.

The conference is from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University Club at the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Nordhoff Street.

The nationally recognized Human Interaction Research Institute conducts applied, community-focused projects in two related areas: knowledge utilization and change management, and health communication.

Seating is limited for the conference and registration is required. For more information, call (818) 677-2550.
