Gamboa, whose photographic work is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., is appearing as part of CSUN's new Latino/a Arts Collaborative, the university's new initiative to make Northridge into the hub of Latino art and culture in the San Fernando Valley.
"Frame of Relevance" is a full-length multimedia theatrical work that spoofs contemporary notions of societal roles, norms and behavior.
The piece incorporates narrative text, live performance, video, projected slide images and digital audio to tell a story of two people suffering from social injustice, including political intrigue, artistic censorship and other typical forms of repression.
"Frame of Relevance" will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 in the Performing Arts Center on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge,.
Among the artists appearing in the piece are Max Benavidez, Barbara Carrasco, Diego Gamboa, Linda Gamboa, Gronk, Humberto Sandoval and Paulina Sahagun.
"The university is proud that it is serving as a meeting place for some of the nation's leading artists who are working with Harry Gamboa on this piece," said Florentino Manzano, director of the Student Resource Center and Educational Opportunities Program in CSUN's College of Arts, Media and Communication.
"This falls in line with our goal of becoming a center for Latino artists," Manzano said.
Gamboa is the second in a series of artists to appear as part of CSUN's new Latino/a Arts Collaborative.
The nationally recognized comedy troupe Culture Clash just finished a sold out run of "Culture Clash Anthology," retrospective of some of their most popular pieces put together especially for their CSUN appearance. Among those who attended that show were Delores Huerta, vice president of the United Farm Workers.
Future collaborative appearances include performance artist Lalo Alcaraz, visual artist Patssi Valdez and playwright Josefina Lopez.
Gamboa is an internationally recognized multimedia artist whose photographic, literary and performance works have been presented at such venues as the Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno and Palacios de las Bellas in Mexico City, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain.
He has received fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the J.P. Getty Visual Artist Trust Fund, the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and the California Arts Council.
Gamboa is also a part-time lecturer with CSUN's Chicano Studies Department.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for faculty and staff and $5 for students, senior citizens and children.
