Caretto will assume his post Jan. 1, 1998. Until then, Dorothy Miller will continue as acting dean.
"He brings a rich background in both academia and private industry to the demanding position of the dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science," said Louanne Kennedy, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "He is a welcomed addition to the university's family."
Caretto was a member of the college's faculty from 1971 until 1992, when he became a partner at Sierra Research, a private firm that assists major corporations in meeting federal and state regulations regarding air quality and emission standards.
Caretto received his bachelor's and master's degrees and doctorate in engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.
His major research fields include thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, chemical reaction engineering and computational fluid dynamics. In 1978, Caretto was appointed by then Gov. Jerry Brown to the California Air Resources Board, on which he served until 1983. From 1983 until 1987, he was a member of the South Coast Air Quality Management Board.
Caretto originally joined CSUN's faculty in 1971 as an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He was promoted to professor in 1974, and served as department chair from 1974 to 1979. From 1989 to 1992 he served as associate dean of the college.
Caretto said he was glad to be returning to Northridge.
"I left five years ago because I had an opportunity to enter the professional world-I had been an academic most of my life and I thought it was something I would like to try," he said. "I think I like being an academic more."
