Other Californians listed in the magazine's January-February issue as among present leaders in higher education are Patrick Callan, former leader, California Policy Center on Higher Education; K. Patricia Cross, professor emeritus of education, UC Berkeley; Augustine Gallego, chancellor, San Diego Community College District; Barry Munitz, president, J. Paul Getty Trust; Ward Connerly, member, University of California Board of Regents; Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Santa Clarita), congressman and chair of the subcommittee studying reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, and Alexander Astin, director, Higher Education Research Institute, UCLA.
Five Californians were noted as among the nation's most promising up-and-coming leaders. They are Patricia J. Gumport, associate professor, Graduate School of Education, Stanford University; Michael Hergert, dean, College of Business, San Diego State University; Theodore Mitchell, dean, Graduate School of Education, UCLA; Condoleeza Rice, provost, Stanford University, and William G. Tierney, director, Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis, School of Education, USC.
The magazine drew on the results of 11,000 questionnaires to compile the list.
