Culture Clash Inaugurates CSUN's Latino Arts Collaborative

Cal State Northridge will launch its new Latino Arts Collaborative with special performances by the nationally renowned comedy troupe Culture Clash from Oct. 16 through 18 at the university.

The troupe is the first in a series of Latino artists who will perform or present their work at Cal State Northridge throughout the academic year as part of the university's new initiative to highlight Latino culture.

"We hope to become the hub of Latino artistry in the San Fernando Valley," said Florentino Manzano, director of the student resource center and educational opportunities program for CSUN's College of Arts, Media, and Communication.

Future appearances include performance artist Lalo Alcaraz; visual artist Harry Gamboa, who has just finished a show at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.; visual artist Patssi Valdez; and playwright Josefina Lopez.

Culture Clash, who have received critical acclaim across the country for their uncompromising political satire and insights into Latino culture, will inaugurate the new collaborative with a special anthology of their work as well as performances of new material.

The retrospective, "Culture Clash Anthology," will include pieces from "A Bowl of Beings;" "S.O.S.-Comedy for these Urgent Times;" "Carpa Clash;" and "Radio Mambo."

The comedy trio will actually start their CSUN appearance with a free community workshop on the history of Chicano theater at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the university's Performing Arts Center.

"Culture Clash Anthology" will premiere Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center and will continue through Saturday, Oct. 18. Performing with the trio will be the theater troupe "Chusma."

Following the Friday, Oct. 17, show will be a free performance by the hip hop group "Aztlan Underground," and visual artists "Mal Ojo" in the University Student Union Pub.

Tickets for "Culture Clash Anthology" are $15 for general admission, $12 for faculty and staff, and $10 for students, senior citizens and children.

Tickets are available through Cal State Northridge's A.S. Ticket Office at (818) 677-2488. General admission tickets are also available at all TicketMaster outlets.
