Carpenter is one of approximately 1,600 U.S. grantees who will travel abroad for the 1997-98 academic year under the Fulbright Program. The program, established under Congressional legislation introduced by former Arkansas Sen. J. William Fulbright, is designed "to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries," according to Fulbright officials.
Under the Fulbright Program, some 4,000 grants are awarded each year to American students, teachers and scholars to study, teach and conduct research around the world, and to foreign nationals to engage in similar activities in the United States. Individuals are selected on the basis of academic and professional qualifications, plus their ability and willingness to share ideas and experiences with people of diverse cultures.
Carpenter received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, his master's from the University of the Pacific, and his doctorate from the University of Georgia. He held a postdoctoral position at the Smithsonian Institution and was the Director of Research for National Undersea Research Program in the Virgin Islands prior to becoming a professor at CSUN in 1988.
His research focuses on interactions between herbivores and algal communities in coral reef and kelp forest environments.
