CSUN Celebrates Pan African Studies Department and the Role of the African-American Women

Cal State Northridge will celebrate the 29th anniversary of the Black Student Union revolt and the founding of the Pan African Studies Department at CSUN with performances, panel discussions and open forums on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Performing Arts Center, on the east side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

David Horne, chair of the Pan African Studies Department, and Jermaine Thompson, president of the BSU, will present a brief history of the founding of the department and CSUN students Tamara Benefield and Tyrone Fox will recite poetry and play excerts.

Playwright Earl Anthony will direct "The Life of Fannie Lou Hamer: Celebrating the Warrior Spirit in African-American Women," with student Ashante Stoner playing the role of Fannie Lou Hamer, and music performed by CSUN's Pomo Crittendon.

Inglewood and Kennedy High school students will read essays on, "Race Relations and My Community," followed by a panel discussion on "A New Agenda for Activism in the 90's."

The event will end with an open forum on the role of the Pan African Studies Department and the BSU as they approach the 21st century.
