Philip Handler, dean of the College of Arts, Media and Communication, said it was an honor to have Scott speak to the 836 students graduating from the college.
"It is especially gratifying that our commencement will feature a speaker who practices the highest professional standards and who is a good friend of the college," Handler said, noting that Scott is a member of the college's Dean's Council.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on the lawn in front of the Oviatt Library in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
Scott has had a distinguished career in theater, television and film. He graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts with an MFA and went directly to work for Joseph Papp at the New York Shakespeare Festival where he staged and took to Broadway the widely acclaimed play for colored girls who considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf.
While still working in the New York theater, Scott was brought out to Hollywood to direct Richard Pryor and Cicely Tyson in the film Bustin' Loose.
Scott has also had a successful career in television, directing episodes of Chicago Hope, The Practice, Party of Five, Picket Fences, LA Law, Northern Exposure, Hill Street Blues, Fame and The Cosby Show.
