Celebrating 25 Years of Community Service

Cal State Northridge is throwing a party on October 19 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Urban Studies Program and 25 years of the program's dedication to community service.

The gala celebration and a reunion of Urban Studies alumni will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

The evening will feature presentations from Los Angeles City Councilmen Hal Bernson and Richard Alarcon and Los Angeles City Planning Director Con Howe, who will give his vision of Los Angeles in the year 2025.

Two awards will be given in memory of Bobbi Paine, a Cal State Northridge alumnus and well-known community activist who died in 1988 of cancer. One will honor an alum for outstanding community service, and the another an urban studies student who shows promise.

Tim Dagodag, director of the Urban Studies Program, said in the past 25 years approximately 500 students have graduated from the program, which examines the problems that face American cities, such as crime, land use, environmental concerns and traffic.

"Our focus is on the solutions," Dagodag said.

Dagodag said most urban studies alumni work for governmental agencies at the local, state or national level.

"From the beginning, and we were ahead of the curve; we've emphasis community service," he said. "And our alum seem to follow in that path."
