The actual conversion of the phone lines will begin on Thursday, July 11, at 5 p.m. and will continue until completed for the opening of business on Monday, July 15.
The prefix is changing to accommodate the university's growth, and will not affect the surrounding community. The last four digits of the campus's numbers will remain the same, except for high speed modem dial-in access lines which are only used by students and university faculty and staff.
"We hope the transition will be as painless as possible to the campus as well as to the community outside," said Janice Johnson, a telecommunications analyst.
Johnson said some telephone service on campus may be interrupted during the conversion. Lines may be out of commission from one to 15 minutes, or conversations may be cut off.
Because 677 is a brand new prefix created for the campus, people calling from other locations may have difficulty reaching the university if the new number has not been programmed into their communications equipment as a dialable number. If this occurs, Johnson suggests the person making the call should notify their telecommunications department of the problem.
