Northridge Inaugurates 'Free Speech' Area with Forum on Proposition 209

Cal State Northridge will inaugurate a new "Open Forum Area" with a discussion of Proposition 209, the California Civil Rights Initiative, on Wednesday, October 23.

The university's Campus Planning Board last month tentatively approved the creation of an open-air (free speech) area in the Sierra Quad for members of the campus community to express their views.

The inauguration ceremony will begin at noon with presentations by Vice President for Student Affairs Ron Kopita and student body president Vladimir Cerna.

The forum on Prop. 209, sponsored by the campus' Presidential Advisory Board on Equity and Diversity, will follow at 1 p.m.

Among the faculty expected to participate are assistant women's basketball coach Jeanette Armentano; speech communication professor Elizabeth Berry; political science professor Leonard Billet; Faculty Senate President Jim Goss, a religious studies professor; philosophy professor Jim Kellenberger and economics professor Bill Brown.

The inauguration is being organized by Project Community. For more information, call Wendy Yost at (818) 677-2393.
