CSUN Hosts Statewide MEChA Conference

More than 1,200 Latino students and their families from across the state will gather at Cal State Northridge next week to take part in Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan's Fall 1996 Statewide Conference.

The conference, which will take place Nov. 8-10 in the University Student Union, will cover a variety of subjects, from Chicano studies in high school and Latinos in the arts to alcoholism and domestic violence. There are even workshops for children.

Filiberto Gonzalez, president of CSUN's MEChA, said this is the first time the group has invited parents to the conference.

"We want to involve not just the students, but our parents, our brothers and sisters and our children," Gonzalez said. "This is our means of empowering and communicating as Chicano students on a statewide level to each other and our families. We're talking about educating everyone."

The conference's keynote speakers are Rudy Acuna and Juana Mora, professors in Chicano/Chicana Studies at Cal State Northridge. They will speak at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.
