Women in Film Scholarship Goes to Graduate Student

Producer Garry Marshall has named Cal State Northridge the recipient of a $2,500 Women in Film scholarship that will help defray educational costs for a graduate student in the Radio-Television-Film Department .

Marshall, producer of movies "Pretty Woman" and "Beaches" and such television shows as "The Odd Couple," "Happy Days," and "I Spy," was honored earlier this month by the organization. Women in Film is dedicated to supporting the presence and professional growth of women in the entertainment industry.

As an honoree, Marshall selected Northridge to receive a Women in Film scholarship for one of its student. The R-TV-F Department in turn awarded graduate student Anita Cal the money.

"We're delighted that Garry Marshall chose Northridge to receive this prestigious scholarship," said department chair Judy Marlane. "And I'm also delighted that our faculty unanimously chose Anita Cal, an outstanding film student, to receive the award."

Cal is working on her thesis screenplay "Birth Rite." She has written and produced low-budget music videos. She also wrote and co-produced "Parental Guidance," a comedy scheduled to be made by Showtime in December starring Maia Campbell of UPN's "In the House" and Casey Lee of Fox's "In Living Color."

Women in Film was formed in 1973 in response to a growing need for an organization to support and promote the presence and professional growth of women in the entertainment industry. It held its annual "Lucy Awards," named in honor of comedienne Lucille Ball, on Sept. 7 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
