CSUN Hosts Conference on Black Men

Los Angeles Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas is one of the featured speakers at the first Black Men's Conference at Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Oct. 19.

The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Student Union in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

The conference was inspired by last year's Million Man March in Washington D.C. and is sponsored by the university's Black Student Union.

"We hope to provide a forum for 15- to 30-year-old males who are seeking answers on how to deal with the family, health and career options as well as prejudice, discrimination and economic advancement," said Darius G. Riggins, a graduate student and co-chair of the event.

Councilman Ridley-Thomas will open the conference. There will be sessions on family, health, spirituality, academics, discrimination and economic advancement. Amen Rahh, a black studies professor at Cal State Long Beach, will give the afternoon's keynote address.

Pre-registration is $12. On-site registration is $15. Seating is limited. For more information, call the University Student Union at (818) 677-2491.
