Betton, who is deaf and the mother of three, has worked extensively within the community with deaf and hard of hearing children. She worked with deaf students in Los Angeles and Burbank unified school districts, and Tripod School for the Deaf in Burbank. Betton has also tutored students at Cal State Northridge, and taught sign language to individual families with deaf children.
She said she was honored to receive the award. "I feel with my insight and experiences as well as my ambition, I would be able to make a difference and hopefully be a part of a new trend in providing 'quality' education for deaf children," she said
Betton, a North Hollywood resident, has an associates of arts degree in English from Glendale Community College and a bachelors degree in English from Cal State Northridge.
