Four "Phenomenal" Women to be Honored by CSUN

Four Los Angeles women will be honored Sunday, Oct. 6, at Cal State Northridge for their distinguished service and contributions to the community.

The Phenomenal Woman Awards are given out each year by the university's Women's Studies Department to honor women who embody "feminism in action."

The recipients will be honored at a special reception and silent auction from 4 to 6 p.m. in the University Club at the corner of Nordhoff Street and Zelzah Avenue.

The honorees are Los Angeles Times columnist Robin Abcarian; Juana Beatriz Gutierrez, director of Madres del Este de Los Angeles, Mothers of East Los Angeles; senior citizen activist and community volunteer Betty Kozasa; and Avis Ridley-Thomas, administrator of the Dispute Resolution Program for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office.

Last year's honorees included muralist and community activist Judith Baca; Yvonne Chan, principal of the Vaughn Learning Center; Los Angeles City Councilwomen Jackie Goldberg; CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson; and CSUN Provost Louanne Kennedy.

Proceeds from this year's reception and auction will fund student scholarships, faculty development, information resources, guest lectures and special programs. The events are open to the public.
