CSUN to Celebrate Africa with Week of Activities

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 8, 2004) -- Cal State Northridge will celebrate Africa's contributions to the world with a week of activities from Oct. 25 through Oct. 29.

The third annual "Celebration of Africa" week will feature events designed to heighten awareness of the continent -- from its natural beauty to its contribution to the advancement of knowledge.

"We hope to get the school and the community involved in understanding the discourse of Africa, the continent, and the diasporas," said Tom Spencer-Walters, chair of CSUN's Pan-African Studies Department and event. "We also hope that by taking part in these events, CSUN students will consider African studies as a viable minor."

Spencer-Walters also said he hoped the week would raise awareness of the need for mutual respect and fair and equitable treatment of all humanity throughout the world.

The week's event include performances by African drumming and dance groups, a symposium on the conflict in the Sudan, an African art exhibit, expert panel discussions on current issues facing the continent, distinguished guest speakers, including notable Hollywood actress Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, a movie discussion series; and an African banquet made entirely of African, African-American, and Caribbean cuisine.
