CSUN to Join C.H.P. for Sobriety Checkpoint Oct. 10

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 3, 2003) - In an effort to further enhance traffic safety on and around Cal State Northridge's campus, the university's police department will be joining for the first time with the California Highway Patrol to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on the evening of Friday, Oct. 10.

University police officers on motorcycles and in marked police vehicles will be assisting the C.H.P. at a major intersection near the university between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

"We have a solid and successful relationship with the C.H.P.," said Northridge Police Chief Anne P. Glavin. "In this instance, we will be partnering with the C.H.P. to remove intoxicated drivers from our university's environment and the surrounding community. It is the goal of both agencies that not only the campus, but the neighborhoods and streets around Cal State Northridge, are free from intoxicated motorists."

Drivers near the checkpoint will encounter signs indicating that the checkpoint is ahead. After being diverted into a designated lane of traffic, motorists will be detained momentarily while the checkpoint is being explained.

Officers assigned to the checkpoint will attempt to make contact with the driver of each vehicle. Should traffic become heavy, however, vehicles will be selected for contact by a pre-set standard.

California State University, Northridge has 33,000 full- and part-time students and offers 61 bachelor's and 42 master's degrees as well as 28 education credential programs. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley and the fourth largest in the 23-campus CSU system. The university serves as the intellectual, economic and cultural heart of the Valley and beyond.
