CSUN to Host Safety Fair
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 15, 2003) - In the rush of a new school year, issues like safety can get lost in the chaos.
Cal State Northridge's Department of Public Safety is joining with the California Highway Patrol and the Valley Trauma Center to host a "Safety Awareness and Interactive Learning Fair" on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Matador Bookstore Quad on the south side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to place all of our public safety and related themes together at one time in one place for the benefit of the community," said NorthridgeÕs police chief, Anne P. Glavin. "Personal safety requires education and awareness. Hopefully, this is a convenient opportunity to display the many services available for our community to see."
The day will offer people an opportunity to register their bicycles, learn about and sign up for a Rape Aggression Defense course for women, speak with peer counselors from the university's Klotz Student Health Center, sign up for CPR classes, take a field sobriety test and more.
The fair is part of the university's observance of national Public Safety Awareness Week.
Other activities during the week include an opportunity for university students to learn about the dangers of driving while intoxicated on Monday, Sept. 22, and about the C.H.P.'s Designate a Driver Program on Tuesday, Sept. 23. These activities also will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Matador Bookstore Quad.
Local businesses contributed resources to the fair, including a $50 gift-certificate from Wal-Mart to be given away during a free drawing. Other business supporters include Vons, Jamba Juice, Trader Joe's, Costco and Ralph's.
