CSUN Center for Community Service-Learning
Receives $20,000 from WorldCom
(NORTHRIDGE Calif., November 5, 2002) Cal State Northridge¹s Center for Community Service-Learning has been awarded a $20,000 grant to teach computer literacy to disadvantaged families.
The project, "University Partnership for Learning the Internet with our Family Together" (UPLIFT), received the grant from WorldCom, Brown University and Campus Compact.
"Considering WorldCom¹s financial circumstances, we are pleased that they were able to retrieve some of the original grant funds in order to allow us to continue providing students and parents in underserved communities with computer-based programs," said Maureen Rubin, director for the Center for Community Service-Learning. "This grant will give us a final year to locate alternative funding to continue our excellent computer training programs."
The project will be headed by CSUN computer science professor Gloria Melara and Chicano studies professor Gabriel Buelna. Melara and Buelna, with the help of a team of Northridge students, will teach parents and children at Discovery Charter Prepatory School in Pacoima and Community Charter Middle School in San Fernando how to use computers.
Launched in 1998, the Center for Community Service-Learning aims to inspire, encourage and support students and faculty in their pursuit of academic excellence through involvement in meaningful community service.
