"The awards allow the university to say thank you and recognize a few people who have demonstrated great interest in and loyalty to Cal State Northridge," said Gray Mounger, assistant vice president for Alumni Relations. "Through this recognition, we hope to affirm our continuing invitation to those who wish to be a part of our great university."
Among these being recognized are Marjorie McGregor, Joseph Russo, Carlos Fuentes, Morris Cutler, Jolie DeVorin, Don Sepulveda, Daisy Kuhn, Alan Meyer, Patrick Smith, Jackie Schroggin, Christopher Whittington, James Overall, Loree Fink, Joni Novosel, David Phelps, David Brady, Sesar Carreno, Robert Barker and Del Stelck, a retired professor, will receive the Emeriti Merit Award.
Three volunteers will receive a special honor, the Dorothea Heitz Outstanding Volunteer Award, for their extraordinary efforts on behalf of the university:
The Dorothea Heitz Award recipients are:
- Dorothea "Granny" Heitz, for whom the award is named, is responsible for building the university's spirit squad into what it is today-an entity that not only fosters school spirit but serves as a model to impress the importance of community and campus service.
She has served as official hostess for the campus and her efforts led to the creation of the campus student ambassadors.
Heitz attended the University of Montana in 1935, but dropped out because of the Depression era hardships. Thirty-one years later, she enrolled at what was then San Fernando Valley State College, now CSUN, at the age of 50 to finish her degree.
- Alma Zatarain and her husband, Mark Bowland, have attended more than 1,000 Cal State Northridge games, concerts and events. She has been an active member of the Alumni Association's Board of Directors. She served for several terms on the association's executive committee rising to the role of vice president and then president. As president of the association, she was responsible for signing the largest affinity partnership agreement in university history, bringing nearly $450,000 of support to the university.
- Wayne Adelstein publishes several monthly regional and community newspapers in the San Fernando Valley. He has emphasized the university's intrinsic value to the region and featured stories promoting campus cultural and performing arts opportunities in his publications. In 1996, he was elected the Alumni Association's 19th president. As president, he developed the association's first strategic plan and mission statement and developed new cultural programs and reunions to reach out and involve alumni.
