The grant for $120,413 is intended to bolster the mechanical engineering design section of the department. The money will be used to buy advanced computer workstations and software as well as a rapid prototyping machine, which is used to provide designers feedback on the manufacturability of what they have created.

"The funds really help us accelerate the development of a modern curriculum in mechanical engineering design," said Stewart Prince, a professor in the department. Prince, the principal investigator for this project, is being assisted by professor Larry Caretto.

Prince added, "The grant will allow the completion of a state-of-the-art design facility to be used by all students in the mechanical engineering department at CSUN."

The completed facility will consist of a network of high-performance computer workstations with modeling and analysis software, a rapid prototyping device and two already existing completely computer-automated machines that can do a number of different machining operations such as milling, drilling, tapping and boring.

Mechanical engineers are involved in all aspects of the design of systems and processes for generating, converting and using power for beneficial purposes. These aspects range from the design of mechanical components to the optimization of large and complex power generation systems as well as the minimization of environmental impact. Mechanical engineers are involved in modeling and testing the design of such devices and systems as automobile engines, aircraft and space vehicles, gas and steam turbines, heating and air conditioning systems, transmissions and robots.
