Contemporary Basketry and Knotting Exhibit
Opens at CSUN Galleries
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 3, 2002) æ Cal State Northridge's Art Galleries will showcase "Fiber Optics," an exhibit of works by 20 contemporary Southern California artists, from Oct. 18 through Nov. 16.
"Fiber Optics" opens with a reception from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. Also scheduled, are a tour of the exhibit on Monday, Oct. 21, at 9:30 a.m. and a panel discussion on Monday, Oct. 28, starting at 3 p.m.
The fiber arts of basketry and knotting date back several millennia and the medium continues to have a strong appeal. Traditional divisions between art forms and the media have disintegrated over the past decade and today's artists are introducing new techniques and materials in a multitude of styles and interpretations, ranging from elegantly functional to elaborately surreal.
This exhibit reinforces the broader vision and more expansive possibilities currently embraced by the art world.
The artists featured in the exhibition are Leah Danberg, Rosalie Friis-Ross, Ferne Jacobs, Polly Jacobs-Giacchina, Gerri Johnson-McMillin, C. A. Michel, Cathy Molholm, Merrill Morrison, Judy Mulford, Suzye Ogawa, Stephanie Plaut, Lois Rainwater, Sheila Rollins, Carole Rouin, Norman Sherfield, Debbie Shriver, Karyl Sisson and Barbara Widdess.
