CSUN to Host Forum on Protecting Digital Assets

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 24, 2002) - Cal State Northridge's College of Engineering and Computer Science will host a special forum on "Protecting Digital Assets: Patents and Copyrights for Computer Software" on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The discussion is designed to inform creators of digital technologies and computer software about patent and copyright protections and procedures.

Todayıs rapid advancements in computer technology make this a very hot topic, especially in the academic world, said CSUN computer science professor Shan Barkataki.

"This forum is certainly important because the process is not simple and people are not aware of protecting their rights," said Barkataki, who knows how difficult it is to get software patented, having gone through the process himself.

Barkataki explained that in todayıs world, software is as vital as water and electricity.

"Innovative software designs represent intellectual property, often with considerable tangible values. However, to make any money, the software must first be protected," Barkataki said. "What can one use to safeguard that million-dollar killer software applications? Copyrights, patents, licenses, trade secrets, or all of the above."

The forum is sponsored by the law firm of Arter and Hadden and will be conducted by two of its attorneys, John Garred and Susan Mizer.

The forum is open to the public and will take place in the Oviatt Library presentation room from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13. Seating is limited. The registration deadline is Nov. 8. For more information or reservations, contact Carolina Franco-Ardaghi at (818) 677-6658 or via e-mail at carolina@csun.edu.
