CSUN Exhibit Features Visiting Artist from Czechoslovakia
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 3, 2002) - A new exhibit at Cal State Northridge's Art Galleries opens this month featuring the work of contemporary Czechoslovakian artist Vaclav Vaculovic.
"Soul of the Sixth Sense" will be on display from Oct. 18 to Nov. 16 in the university's Main Gallery at the northern end of the campus between Plummer and Halsted streets east of Etiwanda Avenue.
An opening reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, featuring a violin/viola recital by Zdenka Vaculovicova, who is visiting from the Republic of Czechoslovakia. Artist Vaclav Vaculovic will give an exhibition tour of his work on Monday, Oct. 21, beginning at 11 a.m.
Vaclav Vaculovic is fascinated by the spiritual worlds of human existence, death and salvation. Influenced by the French theologian Teilhard de Chardin, the artist translates his passionate spirituality into vibrant imagery utilizing fiery colors as well as muted tones to convey his visionary impressions of life and after-life.
Known primarily as a painter, this exhibition will feature 50 of the artistıs monoprints, dating from 1987 to the present, many of which have never been shown in North America. Ranging from ephemeral abstractions to forceful figurations, the series of monoprints illuminate Vaculovicıs journey through questions on existence and salvation.
Vaculovic has been widely exhibited in Europe and is an organizer of the Forfest Festival of Contemporary Arts in Czechoslovakia.
