CSUN Students, Faculty, Staff to Create
"Wall of Reflection" in Memory of Sept. 11 Tragedies
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 1, 2001) - Beginning next week, Cal State Northridge students, faculty and staff will post their reflections and memories of the Sept. 11 tragedies on a fence in the middle of the campus.
The first pieces of the "Wall of Reflection" will be set up about 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 5. New pieces will be added as they are created throughout the semester. The wall will remain in place through the end of December.
"What we've noticed is that our sense of safety and unity has certainly been shaken," said Jimmie Flanagin, a CSUN graduate student majoring in psychology and one of the organizers of the wall. "The 'Wall of Reflection' is a way to foster a sense of community again and also a sense of safety. We feel that a lot of attention is being given to our differences, this is good and healthy, but the thing we should also not lose track of is that we have a lot of similarities and are all living together.
"We hope the wall is a peaceful reflection of people's memories of Sept. 11," Flanagin said.
CSUN students, faculty and staff have been invited to put their reflections of the Sept. 11 tragedies, in the form of art, poetry, prose or a combination of the three, on a piece of cloth no more than 45 inches tall and 70 inches wide. The pieces will be reviewed by a committee of students, faculty and staff, and then tied to a construction fence currently surrounding the university's quad, which is in the middle of a landscaping project, in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
