CCSUN to Host Town Hall on Aftermath of Terrorist Attacks

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 12, 2001) - Cal State Northridge officials invited the community to joined them in a Town Hall meeting on Monday, Oct. 22, to examine the aftermath of the terrorist attacks and America's response.

The meeting will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., in Northridge. Parking is available in Lot G along Zelzah Avenue for $3.

"This new kind of war on terrorism is so complex, it will be necessary to inform everyone about the complex historical, political, geographical, financial and religious issues at the core of this current global crisis," said Tom Piernik, director of the university's Student Development and International Programs. "This kind of Town Hall meeting is an important educational resource that CSUN can offer our campus and community."

Faculty from across the campus will examine the issues raised by the Sept. 11 attack and America's bombing of Afghanistan. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions.

Among the topics for discussion are Islam and its relationship to the current conflict; the potential economic impact of the terrorist attack on the United States and the rest of the world; the geographic issues in the Middle East that Americans should understand as the country goes to war in the region; the political issues related to the conflict and how they affect current and future foreign policy decisions; and the historical actions and prejudices that influence perceptions of America in the rest of the world.

The forum will also address the issues of grief, loss and anger Americans feel and what steps can be taken to regain a feeling of control or normalcy.

Among those faculty members taking part in the Town Hall are religious studies professor Amir Hussain, finance professor William Jennings, geography professor Antonia Hussey, political science professor Mehran Kamrava, history professor Michael Meyer and Robert Kemmerling, director of the university's counseling center.
