The Latest on the San Fernando Valley Economy:

Slowing Growth, Entertainment Remains Huge, Real Estate is Hot

What:

A research center at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) will issue its annual report on the economy of the San Fernando Valley, detailing the region's latest trends in employment, real estate, population, demographics and other sectors.

Highlights of the new 90-page report by CSUN's San Fernando Valley Economic Research Center will launch the 13th annual Business Forecast Conference of the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA). The daylong event also will include Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn's first "State of the Valley" address.

Key San Fernando Valley trends discussed in the report include:

  • slowing job growth across the Valley region, which totals 1.7 million people and 37 percent of the population in the city of Los Angeles;
  • the major role the entertainment industry, particularly production and distribution, plays as the Valley's largest private employment sector; and
  • the increasingly tight Valley housing market both for sales and rentals.

Copies of the center's fourth annual report, the 2001-2002 edition, will be available at the Business Forecast Conference, and also are available to the news media by request to the Cal State Northridge Public Relations Office.
