Phenomenal Women Award Recipient To Speak at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 26, 2001) - Cal State Northridge's Women's Studies Department will hold its second Phenomenal Women Distinguished Lecture featuring scholar and activist Bettina Aptheker at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8.
Aptheker, a 2000 Phenomenal Women Award recipient and a UC Santa Cruz women's studies professor, will talk about "Feminism, Compassionate Action and Social Change."
A reception honoring Aptheker will take place at 5:30 p.m. before the lecture. Both events will be held in the University Student Union's Grand Salon on the eastside of campus, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.
Aptheker has written extensively on issues of race, class, gender and sexuality. Her books include "The Morning Breaks: The Trial of Angela Davis," "Tapestries of Life: Women's Work," "Women's Consciousness and the Meaning of Daily Experience," "Women's Legacy: Essays on Race, Sex & Class in American History" and "If They Come in the Morning: Voices of Resistance" (co-authored with Angela Davis).
Aptheker's contributions in women's studies scholarship have been recognized by an Excellence in Teaching Award from UC Santa Cruz. She also received the 1996 Woman of the Year Award from the Santa Cruz Commission on Women.
CSUN's Phenomenal Women Awards have been presented to more than 20 women since 1996, recognizing the contributions they have made towards a more just and equitable society.
