$40,000 in Scholarships Awarded to
CSUN Engineering, Computer Science Students
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 7, 2001) - A special reception honoring Cal State Northridge engineering and computer science students who together have received nearly $40,000 in scholarships will be held Friday, Sept. 14, at the university.
The celebration will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the University Club at the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Nordhoff Street in Northridge.
"We are delighted that so many corporate and individual donors are supporting our talented engineering and computer science students," said Diane Schwartz, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. "The year 2001 marks the largest scholarship program in the history of our college, with 24 students receiving close to $40,000 in scholarships."
Among those being recognized are four students who are being honored as Dean's Scholars. Similar to the university's Presidential Scholar's Program, the four will receive full scholarships as well as other benefits. The students are Rhonda El Allamy, a junior in computer science; Nicholas K. Lee, a freshman in computer science; Ronald Solleza, a sophomore in mechanical engineering; and Eric J. Williams, a junior in engineering.
The seven Presidential Scholars in the college also will be recognized. They are Helen Avila, a senior in mechanical engineering; Adam Baker, a junior in computer science; Claudia Morales, a junior in pre-computer science; Mandeep Sehmbey, a sophomore in electrical engineering; Tim Tresierras, a senior in mechanical engineering; Michael Vogel, a senior in mechanical engineering; and Matthew Worland, a senior in computer science.
Presidential Scholars receive a university scholarship covering the university fee of $1,428 per academic year; a partial book allowance and free parking on campus; a mentorship program offering work experience by studying or working closely with a faculty member or administrator;
and special opportunities for continuing contact with the university president and for attendance at cultural events on and off campus.
Other students receiving scholarships are Prudencio Alonso, a junior in civil engineering; Corey Wayne Ballantoni, a senior in mechanical engineering; Elli E. Dushane, a senior in electrical engineering; Kamyar Ghods, a sophomore in civil engineering; David Gonzalez, a freshman in mechanical engineering; Arash Gorgzadeh, a freshman in computer science; Elizabeth Gutierrez, a senior in manufacturing systems engineering; Mark Ha, a senior in electrical engineering; Duy Hoang, a senior in computer science; Tahseena Sultana Khan, a senior in electrical engineering; Pavel Markovsky, a senior in computer science; Minh Nguyen, a senior in computer science; Fidel Pezo, a senior in manufacturing engineering systems; Doris Roman, a senior in mechanical engineering; Armen Shagmirian, a junior in computer science; Robert Bruck, a sophomore in computer engineering; and Michael Murphy, a senior in computer science.
Money for the scholarships came from the Los Angeles County Federation of Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors, the Engineers' Council, the Richard M. Pickett Memorial Endowment, the C.R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Raytheon Solid State Microwave Laboratory, the California Society of Professional Engineers, Teradyne, Inc., the George T. Harness Memorial Endowment, the Ila Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Women in Science and Engineering, the Sage Society, the Dianne Marks Memorial Endowment, Salt Interprises, the Pearl Schumann Block Memorial Endowment, Litton Industries, Joseph and Nancy Owens and the faculty in CSUN's Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management.
