Northridge Panel To Offer Tips on How to Support
Children During the Nation's Crisis
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 12, 2001) - The public is invited to join a team of Cal State Northridge professors on Monday, Oct. 22, as they discuss ways to help children and adolescents emotionally deal with America's war on terrorism.
The discussion, featuring faculty from CSUN's departments of child development, educational psychology, family environmental sciences and psychology, will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in the Oviatt Library Presentation Room. The library is located in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.
"Children have very diverse ways of coping with stressful situations, and it's important to carefully consider this in order to successfully interact with children and promote healthy development," said David Wakefield, a CSUN child development professor and one of the organizers of the event.
Wakefield said event organizers hope that not only will the discussion focus on how children are coping with what is going on, but also provide the adults in their lives some tools for dealing with some very complex issues.
"What is happening in the world right now is affecting how children perceive others, think about religion and a whole lot of other issues," he said. "Parents and teachers are having to deal with questions and issues they may not have expected to address so early in a child's life."
