Conference to Explore the Presidency on Film
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 6, 2000) - Filmmakers and academics from across the country will meet next week to explore the way the American Presidency has been portrayed on film and in television.
"The American Presidency on Film: A National Conference" will take place from Friday, Nov. 10, through Sunday, Nov. 12, at the Westlake Hyatt in Westlake Village.
Cal State Northridge¹s Department of History and College of Extended Learning is offering the conference as part of a course credit option.
CSUN history professor Thomas Maddux said the conference "should be interesting." He will moderate a panel discussion on Ronald Reagan¹s presidency as portrayed in video clips and other historical sources.
Other conference participants include filmmakers Harrison Eagle, Sandra Brice, Patrick Griffin and Jack Karol.
Scholars include Frank Manchel, Jim Welsh, Gary Edgerton, John Tibbetts and Chuck Berg.
Panel topics include "Lincoln, Roosevelt, JFK and the Presidency," "First Ladies," "Imaginary Presidents and First Families," "The White House en mise en scene," "Satires of the Presidency," "Documentary Studies of the Presidency," "TV and the Presidency," and "International Perspectives of the Presidency."
The conference is co-sponsored by the Film and History League, the Journal of Film and History, and Cal State Northridge¹s Department of History and College of Extended Learning.
