Library Exhibit to Feature Rare Mulholland Memorabilia

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 31, 2000) - The public can catch a rare glimpse of the private life of William Mulholland, the man responsible for much of what makes Los Angeles, during an exhibition at Cal State Northridge that opens next month.

William Mulholland and the Rise of Los Angeles will be on display in CSUN's Oviatt Library Exhibit Room from Nov. 13 through Jan. 31, 2001. The exhibit will feature historic as well as rare family photos and memorabilia from his granddaughter Catherine Mulholland's personal collection. Many of the pictures have never before been seen by the public.

Peter Prager, special assistant to the dean of the University Library, said Mulholland chose to display her collection at CSUN because she has close ties with the university.

"And she wanted to give back to the community in which she lives," he said. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Exhibition Room. Catherine Mulholland will give a lecture about her new book, William Mulholland and the Rise of Los Angeles.

William Mulholland was for many years the chief engineer and general manager of the Los Angeles-owned Bureau of Water Works and Supply (now the Water System of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) and was responsible for the construction of the Los Angeles-Owens River Aqueduct.

The aqueduct changed the face of Los Angeles, providing much needed water for its development and growth. Mulholland died in 1935, but his aqueduct is still in use today.
