CSUN Professors Awarded $125,000 to Help
Teen-aged Girls with Physical Disabilities

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 22, 2000) - Two Cal State Northridge professors have received a $125,000 grant from the California Breast Cancer Research Program to develop diet and physical assessment tools for an underserved population - teen-aged girls with physical disabilities.

Assistant professors Carol Koprowski, of the Department of Family Environmental Sciences, and Sarah Hall, of the Department of Special Education, are conducting a pilot study to develop tools, such as questionnaires and surveys, to measure the physical activity and dietary intake in physically disabled girls.

"The development of these tools will lay important groundwork for investigating the influence of lifestyle factors and differences among women with disabilities in the etiology of breast cancer," Hall and Koprowski wrote in their proposal for the study. There are many studies that have focused on physical activity and nutrition and how they relate to diseases, Koprowski said, "but no studies have been done with women with physical disabilities."

A physical disability is any impairment that interferes with a personšs ability to perform the normal activities of daily living.

The project, "Physical Activity and Diet in Adolescents with Disabilities," will involve at least 250 students from the Simi Valley and Burbank school districts. Teachers and parents in these districts will also participate in interviews and focus groups.

The professors received the grant this summer and have already begun their work with the help of researchers in the disciplines of epidemiology and social/behavioral sciences.

California State University, Northridge has more than 28,000 full- and part-time students and offers 48 bachelor's and 39 master's degrees. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley.
