CSUN Takes a Ride on the L.A. Freewaves

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 2, 2000) - Cal State Northridge's Art Galleries will explore the use of video as art as it takes part in the L.A. Freewaves Seventh Annual Festival of Experimental Media in November.

Every Monday in November the public is invited to attend the programs featuring videos by several artists on that eveningıs topic(s), which range from the Baroque to the concept of being watched.

All presentations begin at 7 p.m. in the Main Gallery, located in the north part of campus on Plummer Street between Lindley and Etiwanda Avenues. Attendance is free, but seating is limited so early arrival is suggested. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 6, the Art Galleries will present two individual programs: "Baroque in Modernity" and "Girls in Hell." The first uses videos linked to the Baroque era of the 1600s to document the drama, conflict and opulence of the period through the mood, tone or execution of the artists. "Girls in Hell" presents the works of three artists who show the problems facing teenage girls.

On Monday, Nov. 13, a series of videos look at how routine actions become tedious and devoid of meaning in "Deliberate Intentions." This eveningıs program is followed by "Steps in Time," two films that look at how cultures in the African continent have been adopted to popular activities in the New World, such as high school marching bands.

The following week on Monday, Nov. 20, "Old Stories, New Visions" retells, recasts, rescripts, reformats and reinterprets familiar tales and classics.

The last of the festival exhibitions will be Monday, Nov. 27, with "Watching/Being Watched" which features artists who focus on the pervasiveness of cameras in the 21st century.

In addition to these video and film presentations, a video installation by CSUN graduate Michael Laughlin titled "Three City Blocks" can be viewed during the festival. Laughlinıs work examines the fast pace and over-crowdedness of city life.

L.A. Freewaves (http://www.freewaves.com) is a nonprofit coalition of 44 arts organizations, 32 cable stations and 28 schools that advocates the use of independent video as part of its commitment to intercultural awareness and empowering communities with control over their own images.
