Academics, Hollywood Leaders to Explore
the Economics of the Entertainment Industry

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 18, 2000) ‹ University professors will join Hollywood executives in examining the economics of the entertainment industry at a conference Friday, Oct. 20, at Cal State Northridge.

"The Economics of the Entertainment Industry" features presentations by academics who study what makes money in Hollywood as well as studio executives who will discuss the economic consequences of recent changes in the electronic media and how they impact what Hollywood does.

The conference is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pasadena Room of the University Student Union on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

Among the topics are "The Profitability of Violent Entertainment and the Legal Battle on Violence in the Media," "Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Dilemmas Confronting the Motion Picture Industry," and "The Economic Consequences of Recent Changes in Electronic Media and Regional Trends in the Industry."

Those taking part in the conference include Jim Overman, director of program production at NBC, who will talk about "High Definition Broadcast Television;" Victoria Watson, traffic manager for the WB 100+ Station Group, who will discuss "Hybrid Television Networks: Broadcast and Cable;" Syd Field of Syd Field Screenwriters, Inc., who will talk about "Online Screenwriting Instruction;" and Daniel Blake, a CSUN economics professor, whose topic is "Trends in the Entertainment Industry in the Valley, Los Angeles County and Beyond."

The conference is being presented by CSUN's Entertainment Industry Institute and the College of Business Administration and Economics.
