"Desert Nights/Desert Lights" On Exhibit at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 12, 2000) Cal State Northridge shines the light on the work of southwestern photographer Charles Morgan in an exhibit at the Performing Arts Center Lobby Gallery that runs through Thursday, Dec. 21.

The exhibit, "Desert Nights/Desert Lights," shows this Burbank artist's use of "environmentally safe graffiti" to create images of Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert in night and day. The images are at once beautiful, ethereal, evocative, loud and silent.

Morganšs "environmentally safe" technique uses strobe light and gels to selectively illuminate objects such as a cactus or rock. He cites ancient petroglyphs as the inspiration for his time-exposure photographs.

Morganšs works have shown in contemporary art institutions in Nevada, California, Arizona and Europe.

Morgan will be at a reception Saturday, Oct. 7, from 1-3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center Lobby Gallery in the University Student Union to discuss his works.

The Gallery is open during Performing Arts Center events and one hour prior to performances.

California State University, Northridge has more than 28,000 full- and part-time students and offers 48 bachelor's and 39 master's degrees. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley.
